Kapiti is one of New Zealand’s most valuable nature reserves, and it is the only large island sanctuary for birds between Hauraki Gulf in the north and New Zealand’s southern outlying islands.

Kapiti Island Nature Reserve, Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve on the adjacent mainland shore and the Kapiti Marine Reserve linking the two, form a rare and special part of New Zealand.

Two areas of sea either side of Kapiti Island make up the marine reserve, where all marine life, habitat, objects and structures are protected.

The island is famed for being the site where the first European, Georg Steller, set foot in Alaska on July 1741. The marine park encompasses the approximate landing site of the Bering Expedition.

Kealakakua Bay is a marine sanctuary that may be the best snorkeling spot on the Big Island. The water is very clear and there is a large variety of fish and eels. We have never seen turtles here, but have been told they are around.
